“But, how do I get to the Emerald City?” Dorothy

“Just count your blessings, cut your losses and follow the yellow brick road.”  Miss One

The Wizard of Oz was always a very scary movie to me.  It might seem ridiculous now, but as a kid, the green faced witch and the flying gremlins frightened my sister and me.

But I have always LOVED the movie The Wiz, the musical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Lena Horne and Richard Pryor.  We couldn’t help but dance as we watched the new group of friends “ease on down the road,” grateful for their friendship, leaving behind what no longer serves them, managing their fears with enthusiasm and mutual support, making the uncertain path seem possible and far less frightening.

As the class of 2022 graduates face their own futures, they are likely wondering how and what to do next.  Perhaps a not-so-subtle lesson from The Wiz can help.

Pick your left foot up

When your right one's down,

Come on legs keep movin'

Don't you lose no ground

You just keep on keepin'

On the road that you choose;

Don't you give up walkin'

'Cause you gave up shoes...

Ease on down, ease on down the road

Come on, ease on down

Ease on down the road

Don't you carry nothing

That might be a load,

Come on...

Ease on down,

Ease on down the road

'Cause there may be times

When you think you lost your mind

And the steps you're takin'

Leave you three, four steps behind

But the road you're walking

Might be long sometime,

You just keep on steppin'

And you'll just be fine!

Ease on down, ease on down the road

Ease on down, ease on down the road

Don't you carry nothin'

That might be a load.

Come on, ease on down

Ease on down the road

Congratulations and good luck to the graduates!

(And, a half-hearted apology if you cannot get this song out of your head today!)
